Introduction to Bird Watching (In Person)

Long-time VanDusen birding guide Jeremy Gordon is back on-site with this seasonal favourite! During this introduction, he will discuss the best birding resources such as binoculars and field guides, share tips on identifying birds, and highlight hot birding spots in Vancouver. Following a one-hour classroom presentation, Jeremy will take you for a walk to look for some of the 103 species of birds in the Garden.

The class is designed for aspiring and beginner bird watchers to help build a foundation of knowledge and gain confidence to get out and go birding this spring.

Naturalist's Journal: Botanical Drawing (Online)

Wednesday, April 13 2022 - Wednesday, May 11 2022 10.00am - 12.00pm

Improve your drawing skills for journaling, teaching, or pure enjoyment. Observational drawing is about accurately representing what you see directly from nature in pencil on paper. In the process, identify plants by recording their character and shape, spaces between forms, contour edges, and illustrate the scale of plants. Learn how to capture the illusion of depth by making a series of drawings that look at plants from different perspectives. Katharine will teach you how to record nature through illustration.

Online education techniques include presentations, live front view, and overhead demonstrations.

Healing Skin Salve Class (Online)

Wednesday, April 13 2022 7.00pm - 8.30pm

Salves are used by various ancient and modern cultures and consist of a blend of infused plant oils with melted beeswax that offer you several skin benefits: restore and repair wounds, cuts and scrapes, improve itchy, dry and sunburnt skin; also work as an easy-to-make substitute of industrialized body lotions to protect your largest organ, the skin, with only natural –free of preservative- and local ingredients.

Lori Snyder will demonstrate all the details of salve making so you can start preparing the next time you step outside and discover who is growing around you to help your skin: Antimicrobial, antiseptic, antifungal, just a few of the healing properties that plants offer.

Gardening for Wildlife with Native Plants (In Person)

Saturday, April 30 2022 10.00am - 12.30pm

Explore how to use native plants to beautify your garden and help build habitat for urban wildlife like bees, butterflies, birds and more. Species biodiversity is at increasing risk as our climate continues to change, and we need all hands on deck to rebuild habitat to welcome nature back to our cities, backyards and urban green spaces.
