'All About Birds!' Family Program and Hummingbird & Songbird Banding

Join us on July 9th from 4pm-5pm for ‘All About Birds!’ a family-friendly program featuring fun activities exploring the many feathered friends that call VanDusen Botanical Garden home. Your birdwatching walk will be guided by our Education Director and avid bird-lover, Chantal Martin, who will share tips and tricks for birdwatching as a family, along with fun and informative games and activities.

This exclusive afterhours evening will continue with an informative and fascinating session of Songbird & Hummingbird Banding from 5pm -7pm.

April Chigiri-e Paper Art Series

Friday, April 19 - Friday, April 26 1:00pm - 3:30pm

Chigiri-e is a Japanese art form that uses pieces of hand-dyed washi paper to create beautiful and detailed images. The result resembles a watercolour painting with a delicate texture.

In this hands-on, creative art two-session workshop, you will practice handcrafting skills, learn step-by-step Chigiri-e paper techniques and create two art pieces. Supplies included.

Bird Photography 101

Located on the Pacific Flyway migratory route, the Vancouver area attracts millions of migratory birds yearly. With such an incredible abundance of birds, it is no surprise that the parks in the region are also popular with photo enthusiasts and bird lovers, who visit from near and far.

Join wildlife photographer Liron Gertsman for an in-depth bird photography workshop, going over tips, tricks and techniques for bird photography that can be applied regardless of your camera of choice, smartphones included.

Watercolour: The Magic of Mixing Colours

Spring Introduction to Qigong

Join Anita Wong of the YS Traditional Chinese Medicine & Martial Arts College for an introduction to Qigong. Qigong is a meditation in motion and a simple but effective system to enhance overall health and fitness. This exercise incorporates breathing techniques with body movements and directs energy throughout the meridians.

Through this four-session course, you will relax the body and mind, strengthen bones, enhance balance, and improve blood circulation. This series is suited for beginners and experienced students, with easy-to-follow steps and deep relaxation. Class starts with Qigong practice, followed by some Taichi steps to close.

May Intro to Birding

Saturday, May 4 3.00pm - 5.30pm

Long-time VanDusen birding guide Jeremy Gordon is back on-site with this seasonal favourite! During this introductory level class, he will discuss the best birding resources, such as binoculars and field guides, share tips on identifying local & migratory birds, and highlight hot birding spots around Vancouver. Following a one-hour classroom presentation, Jeremy will take you for a walk to look for some of the 106 species of birds in the Garden.

The class is designed for aspiring and beginner bird watchers to help build a foundation of knowledge and gain confidence to get out and go birding this spring.

Botanical Drawing and Painting Flowers (Online & In Person)

Wednesday, May 8 - Wednesday, May 22 10:00am - 1:00pm

Improve your drawing skills to capture more realistic depictions of flowers in this four-session series. Instructed by artist and educator Katharine Dickinson, her demonstrations will guide you through various exercises on capturing a flower’s identifying features through line, shape, structure and form and observing critical angles and accurate proportions.

Explore watercolour techniques for botanicals, mixing and matching a flower’s natural colours, and applying washes and dry brush details.
