Join us for a community conversation to explore the future of the Royal BC Museum and how museums & public gardens across the province can be more responsive, representative, welcoming, and inclusive for all visitors.

Through a collaborative process, we will dive deeper into the key themes and questions museums and VanDusen Botanical Garden are exploring as they evolve along with our society. Our intention is to engage actively, welcome feedback, build meaningful relationships, and hear from diverse voices and perspectives. Light refreshments will be served.

Botanical Illustration Series

Wednesday, March 13 - Wednesday, April 17 10:00am - 1:00pm

Join local artist Katharine Dickinson for an introduction to depicting and representing plants’ character, form and colour. Explore how to draw plant subjects from the garden accurately while enhancing your observation and artistic skills in this six-session series.

In this beginner Botanical Illustration series, master the essential observational drawing techniques through engaging exercises such as gesture, contour, and volume line drawing. Learn methods for measuring dimensions, understanding foreshortening, and incorporating perspective to create realistic plant drawings.

Introduction to Native Plants and Meadowscaping (Online)

Thursday, March 28 - Thursday, April 4 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Join us for an exciting two-part series on native plants and their benefits, led by Abigail Hyde from Satinflower Nurseries.

In the first session, explore the difference between native and invasive plants, understanding the crucial role of preserving native species. Abby will cover common plant families and identification tips and showcase local Vancouver Island species as ecocultural case studies, highlighting their resilience against seasonal changes.

The second session focuses on transforming properties, large or small, into native meadows, providing habitats for urban wildlife. Abby will guide you through grass removal, seeding and planting strategies, timing, expectations, and maintenance tips, equipping you with the tools to start your own meadow in areas like lawns, boulevards, and community gardens.

April Intro to Birding

Saturday, April 6 10:00am - 12:30pm

Long-time VanDusen birding guide Jeremy Gordon is back on-site with this seasonal favourite! During this introductory level class, he will discuss the best birding resources, such as binoculars and field guides, share tips on identifying local & migratory birds, and highlight hot birding spots around Vancouver. Following a one-hour classroom presentation, Jeremy will take you for a walk to look for some of the 106 species of birds in the Garden.

The class is designed for aspiring and beginner bird watchers to help build a foundation of knowledge and gain confidence to get out and go birding this spring.

Spring Intro to Pacific Northwest Mushrooms (Online)

Thursday, April 11 6:30 - 8:30pm

Springtime offers new opportunities for mushroom enthusiasts. With regular showers and warming soil, mushrooms show up with increasing frequency in both urban areas and forests alike.

This class is an excellent introduction to mushroom foraging. It includes the basics of how mushrooms work, why they are critical to healthy ecosystems, where to find them, the basics of identification, and some common poisonous species.

Chigiri-e Paper Art Series

Friday, April 19 - Friday, April 26 1:00pm - 3:30pm

Chigiri-e is a Japanese art form that uses pieces of hand-dyed washi paper to create beautiful and detailed images. The result resembles a watercolour painting with a delicate texture.

In this hands-on, creative art two-session workshop, you will practice handcrafting skills, learn step-by-step Chigiri-e paper techniques and create two art pieces. Supplies included.

Bird Photography 101

Saturday, April 20 9.00am - 1.00pm

Located on the Pacific Flyway migratory route, the Vancouver area attracts millions of migratory birds yearly. With such an incredible abundance of birds, it is no surprise that the parks in the region are also popular with photo enthusiasts and bird lovers, who visit from near and far.

Join wildlife photographer Liron Gertsman for an in-depth bird photography workshop, going over tips, tricks and techniques for bird photography that can be applied regardless of your camera of choice, smartphones included.

Intro to Qigong Series

Monday, April 29 - Monday, May 20 11:00am - 12:00pm

Join Anita Wong of the YS Traditional Chinese Medicine & Martial Arts College for an introduction to Qigong. Qigong is a meditation in motion and a simple but effective system to enhance overall health and fitness. This exercise incorporates breathing techniques with body movements and directs energy throughout the meridians.

Through this four-session course, you will relax the body and mind, strengthen bones, enhance balance, and improve blood circulation. This series is suited for beginners and experienced students, with easy-to-follow steps and deep relaxation. Class starts with Qigong practice, followed by some Taichi steps to close.
