Taking Flight: Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration Opening Event

Vancouver All British Field Meet Classic Car Show

Saturday, May 18 10.00am - 4.30pm

The Vancouver All British Field Meet (ABFM) returns to VanDusen Botanical Garden on May 18 for their annual British car show on the Great Lawn. Presented by Hagerty, expect to see nearly 500 cars in 62 different classes. The event will also feature live entertainment, food trucks, vendor booths, merchandise for sale, high tea options and more. event ticket is required to access the event area.

Pollinator Days 2024

A buzz-worthy field trip experience for students to learn about pollinators and the environments that support them.

As flowers bloom around VanDusen, bring your class to explore the special relationships between plants, pollinators, and people. Over three days in May, our facilitators will promote curiosity and stewardship through fun, hands-on activities at stations throughout the Garden.

Intro to Butterflies and Moths

Saturday, August 10 10:00am - 12:00pm

Explore the fascinating world of butterflies and moths!

Join Emily Black to dive into their anatomy, life cycles, vibrant colorations, unique behaviours, and essential roles in ecosystems. You will also learn to identify local species and discover how to make your garden more butterfly-friendly. The program includes a 1-hour classroom presentation and 1-hour outdoor observation session.

Summer Pruning: Principles and Techniques

Saturday, August 10 10:00am - 12:30pm

Discover the art of summer pruning for beginners in this workshop.

Learn to control growth in deciduous trees and shrubs, perfect for small spaces. Enhance light, airflow, and fruit quality in fruit trees. Gain insights on pruning Japanese Maples, Birch Trees, and Plums with Laurelle Oldford-Down, following ISA pruning guidelines. Bring a sharp bypass pruner if you have one; extras will be available.

Growing Chinese Medicinal Plants in Your Garden

This five session course will provide you with essential knowledge on growing Chinese medicinal plants and guide you through the proper methods of cultivating, harvesting, processing, and using medicinal herbs.

You will learn how to grow and use 15 common Chinese medicinal plants, differentiate them from other crops, and understand the factors that affect their quality and therapeutic effects. The course will also cover the history, culture, and eastern perspectives on medicine and health.

 

August Wildlife Photography

Join award winning photographer Liron Gertsman for an in-depth wildlife photography workshop, going over tips, tricks and techniques for wildlife photography that can be applied regardless of your camera of choice, (smartphones included!).

This class will include a photo walk through VanDusen and an overview of post-processing techniques to help make your photos shine.

 

 

Guided Tour Through the Garden

Deepen your knowledge of VanDusen Botanical Garden!

Meet VanDusen’s Superintendent and expert gardener Andrew Fleming for an hour-long Garden exploration, during which Andrew will showcase some of the Garden’s plants with distinctive qualities, with an emphasis on herbaceous perennials. Discover stunning species such as Nerine bowdenii, Actaea racemosa and Baptisia australis.

Drawing and Painting Vegetables (Online)

Wednesday, September 11 - Wednesday, October 2

In this four-session series, improve your drawing skills to capture more realistic depictions of vegetables. Artist and educator Katharine Dickinson will instruct you, and her demonstrations will guide you through various exercises on capturing vegetable features through line, shape, structure, and form and observing critical angles and accurate proportions.

Explore watercolour techniques for botanicals, mixing and matching vegetables’ natural colours, and applying washes and dry brush details.
